The Things You Should Know About Hypnosis

by Sarah Cox

Hypnosis and its subset, hypnotherapy, have always been mired in misconceptions. Some consider them to be some type of spell while others hesitate to even acknowledge them. Some of the popular misconceptions linked with hypnosis and the reality behind them are given below.

There is no practice of occult involved in hypnosis. It is a very easy technique, which can be explained without much difficulty with the help of psychology and other scientific methods. People refuse to believe in hypnosis even after watching participants successfully undergoing it in public sessions. They say that hypnotised people allow practitioners to be successful in their art by not displaying enough will power to withstand the effect of their words. But this again is a complete fallacy. Even people with strong will power can fall under the charms of an expert hypnosis practitioner.

Another myth is that hypnosis is an alternate state of consciousness, which again is a big misconception. A hypnotized individual is totally aware of his environment. Hypnosis actually induces a state of complete relaxation characterized by a growth in levels of concentration, and this intensified awareness helps the subject to absorb suggestions without difficulty.

Some scientists have concluded that hypnosis works on just 5% of the human population, and this is another prevalent myth. Although, the finding has some element of truth to it, what makes it hollow is the fact that the scientists used the same hypnosis technique for everyone. People differ in their natures and personalities, and hence there have to be different hypnosis methods to fit the temperaments of different individuals.

People also tend to connect hypnosis to meditation. However, communication between the subject and the practitioner is paramount in hypnosis, while meditation is like an engagement with the self without any external interaction involved. The state of trance and the state of hypnosis are entirely different from each other too. The person doesn't interact to achieve a state of trance, while hypnosis is not possible without communication.

Another misconception is that physical and behavioural changes in an individual are not attainable through hypnosis training or hypnotherapy. Hypnosis obviously cannot attain something that is unnatural to the body. But it can bring about an improvement in physical health by altering behavioural patterns like overeating and constant smoking by raising motivation levels in an individual.

Hypnosis, and specifically hypnotherapy, can have a vital function to play in the overall welfare of an individual, and not giving them a try just because of some misconceptions is a missed opportunity.
